The goal of all voice work is freedom.

Freedom from restriction. Freedom to move.

Freedom to speak. Freedom to sing.

If you’ve found Vibrant Voice Technique, though, you’ve probably arrived here because you’re struggling with muscle tension, vocal fatigue, and symptoms of overuse. You may even be recovering from a vocal injury, or have a diagnosis of muscle tension dysphonia.

We’re glad you’ve found us.

Here’s an interesting thing you may not know about vocal tension:

Hyperfunction

Over-engaged muscles that are tense or locked.

Hypofunction

Under-engaged muscles that are lax or inactive.

In both cases, there is immobility that leads to decreased blood flow and fascial adhesions. (Fascia is the connective tissue around your muscles… a colloquial way to refer to these adhesions is “knots”).

Vibration can help in many ways. It stimulates the nerve receptors in the muscles, encouraging tense muscles to release, and lax muscles to engage.

It increases localized blood flow, which builds heat and helps the fascia soften. Blood flow also provides the muscle with nutrients, and clears out by-products such as lactic acid.

Vibration also activates neural pathways, waking up the mechanoreceptors in the muscles and skin, and bringing awareness to areas that have been dormant. As you use vibration over the course of time, you’ll create possibilities for nervous system re-patterning.

However, Vibrant Voice Technique does not rely solely on the use of external vibration. We combine the use of vibration with anatomically-based exercises. As you progress through our guided exercises, you’ll discover your own patterns of tension, reawaken healthy muscle function, and re-pattern your nervous system for a more resonant, powerful voice.

Our technique will also help you increase vocal resonance. Vibration introduces new possibilities through the language of sensation, inviting us to rely less on forced amplitude, and more on re-shaping the vocal tract for increased vocal power.

If you’re ready to untangle your long-held negative compensatory patterns with your voice, and to find ease in creating sound, we’re ready to share Vibrant Voice Technique with you.

The Story of How It Began

In 2011, an actor friend came to David looking for support for her voice. She’d been spending her days working at the opera as a youth supervisor, and had pushed through a cold. Her voice had become increasingly hoarse, and she had two big acting jobs coming up. She had been to a laryngologist for a vocal stroboscopy, and there were no signs of a structural issue or injury on her vocal folds.

David did a bit of laryngeal massage, and it started to release some vocal tension. He began teaching her how to do the laryngeal massage for herself, but she had a very difficult time touching her own throat. He wondered to himself, “How can I help her release this tension?”

A few days later the idea came:

We use vibrators to release tension in the legs and the back… why don’t we find a compact vibrator to release tension in the neck!

They went to the love shop, and found a small device that seemed to give almost immediate relief…

…And Vibrant Voice Technique was born.
